Unfortunately it doesn't seem to help prevent spammers from your server, and it exacerbates their spam by adding threads after each message. Perhaps try using slow-mode in general since you have threads. If you'd like to talk more about how this looks I can give you a case study from my community. My community has a custom bot that is getting a ton of positive feedback that you might find interesting as a blog post, we've had a few people ask whether our bot was open source or how to buy it.
